DID YOU KNOW?
Recycling one aluminum can saves enough electricity to run a TV for 3
hours or a 100-
watt light bulb for 4 hours.
One
aluminum can thrown away will still be sitting in the landfill after
200 years.
A
used aluminum can is recycled and back on the shelf as a new can in as
little as
60 days.
In 1972 it took about 22 empty aluminum cans to weigh one pound. Today
that same
pound takes about 30 cans.
The average household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper a year.
Most is
packaging and junk mail.
500,000 trees must be cut down to produce each week's Sunday newspapers.
Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees-those 17 trees
can absorb
a total of 250 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Burning that same ton
of paper would
create 1500 pounds of carbon dioxide.
Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an
incinerator. |
